About

I've built QA functions from the ground up at four different companies — writing the first test plan, hiring the first tester, standing up the first automation suite. At Flashtract, I cut testing time 50% and escaped defects 45% through a manual-to-automated transition. Over 25 years across SaaS, fintech, and enterprise retail, including a decade at The Home Depot, I've led teams through ambiguity and built the metrics, KPIs, and processes that make quality measurable. My background as an Air Force veteran shaped how I lead: steady, direct, and built for environments without a playbook yet. Lately I'm focused on how AI reshapes QA: using it to generate tests, and testing AI features themselves, as in the evaluation suite below.

Experience

Lead QA Engineer · Janus International

Feb 2024 – Present · Temple, GA
  • Led the testing effort for the company-wide rollout of Microsoft Dynamics at an NYSE-listed manufacturer with operations in six countries.
  • Wrote and implemented the QA policies, processes and procedures for the program, covering functional, integration, user acceptance and load testing of the Sage 500 ERP integration with Dynamics.
  • Implemented TestRail as the test management tool and linked its test cases to Azure DevOps, so every requirement and defect traces to a test.
  • Led testing of the ServiceMax integration with Dynamics and QuickBooks, which replaced an outdated software configuration.

Lead QA Engineer · Flashtract

Dec 2020 – Apr 2023 · Atlanta, GA
  • Built the first QA team for a SaaS construction-finance company and implemented QA policy and procedure from scratch.
  • Managed a 4-person QA team, streamlining project assignments for a 30% increase in productivity.
  • Cut testing time 50% using Katalon Studio automation, Postman API testing, and Jira KPI reporting for stakeholders, over two years.
  • Reduced escaped defects 45% in six months through strategic testing, defect triage, and automated test conversion.

Sr. Quality Assurance Engineer · CineMassive

Sep 2019 – Mar 2020 · Atlanta, GA
  • Managed the Agile QA/DevOps team for a video-wall technology firm, including app training and strategic hiring.
  • Reduced escaped defects from 35% to 15% in six months through defect triage, QA KPIs, and improved reporting in Pivotal Tracker and Azure DevOps.

Sr. QA Analyst · Cosairus

Oct 2017 – Aug 2019 · Greater Atlanta Area
  • Established Agile QA practices, testing policy, and KPIs at a SaaS software consulting firm.
  • Built a Jira KPI dashboard that improved stakeholder visibility into requirements analysis and testing progress within six months.
  • Increased test coverage 25% in a year by converting manual to automated unit tests with NUnit for C# applications.

Earlier career

QA Manager, RTI — managed the QA team and strategic hires; converted customer requirements into test strategies that reduced code iterations and post-production issues.

2015–2016

Sr. QA Analyst, Conisus LLC — implemented Agile QA, KPIs, and defect management for a biopharmaceutical company; improved test coverage 25% through early automation.

2012–2015

Lead QA Analyst, Fiserv — pioneered the QA function at a SaaS fintech company: processes, KPIs, and manual/automated testing with Selenium, from scratch.

2010–2012

Lead Web QA Analyst, TSYS — managed a 4-person QA team and improved test coverage for a fintech company.

2008–2010

Senior Quality Engineer, The Home Depot — reduced testing time 90% using Unix, Informix, and VBScript automation; owned test planning for the in-store Paint Mixing System.

1998–2008

Congress Report Card

2026 · congressreportcard.org

A public website that grades every member of Congress on attendance and legislative record — and updates, deploys and tests itself every night with no manual steps.

0
manual steps per release
33
smoke checks on every deploy, across three browser engines
~1,500
API calls in each nightly data build
~90 sec
to verify a release in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit
  • Built a nightly GitHub Actions pipeline that pulls data from three public sources, rebuilds the site's data, publishes to GitHub Pages and then runs Playwright smoke tests against the live site.
  • Made the build fail safe: requests retry with backoff, and if more than 5% of records fail to load the run stops and the site keeps the previous day's data.
  • Converted 11 recorded Selenium IDE tests to Playwright for parallel cross-browser runs, with a trace captured on retry and an HTML report saved from every run.
  • Wrote tests that check the pipeline's output as well as the page: record counts, duplicate IDs, internal consistency and data freshness.
  • Added a JMeter plan that reads the member pages from the sitemap, runs a pass of smoke checks, then simulates visitors browsing the live site.

AI Evaluation Suite

2026 · Python · Claude API

A test suite for an AI feature: a tool that answers plain-English questions about members of Congress from the Report Card's data, and the evaluation that measures whether its answers can be trusted.

62
test questions, each with a defined correct answer
4
behaviours tested: facts, rankings, admitting gaps, staying neutral
2
marks per answer: is it correct, and can every figure be traced to the data
36
unit tests on the tool and on the graders themselves
  • Designed the cases around how an AI feature fails: inventing figures, answering about people who are not in the data, giving political opinions, and obeying instructions hidden in a question.
  • Graded facts with code and judgement calls with a second AI model, and tested that judge on answers with known verdicts before trusting it.
  • Computed every expected answer from the live data at run time, so the suite stays correct as the data changes each night.
  • Kept failures of the plumbing apart from failures of the model: an API error or timeout is logged and retried, never scored as a wrong answer.
  • Proved the graders reject wrong answers that look right, and added a GitHub Actions workflow that runs the free checks on every change.

Playwright Test Framework

2026 · TypeScript · Source code

A reusable starting point for UI and API test automation, built the way I would set one up for a new team.

  • Page objects hold locators and actions only; assertions stay in the specs, so a UI change is fixed in one place.
  • Custom fixtures inject page objects and seed test data through the API, and a setup project signs in once and reuses the saved session.
  • UI and API specs run in the same suite, with smoke tests tagged so they can run alone.
  • A GitHub Actions workflow runs the suite on every push and pull request and keeps the HTML report; failures keep a trace, screenshot and video.

NFL Fantasy Lab

2026 · Python · Source code

A Flask app that builds FanDuel lineups with a linear-programming optimizer and predicts game outcomes, covered by a pytest suite at every layer.

  • 66 pytest tests cover the optimizer's rules, the data import, the matchup filters, the Vegas-odds strategy and the game predictor.
  • Browser tests use pytest-playwright against the real app, started in a background thread, instead of a mocked client.
  • Fixtures isolate each test's uploaded data, so a test run never changes the app's real data files.

What people say

“Darrell was our first QA hire. He worked through standing up how QA runs at our company and was able to increase the quality of the product significantly over time. He worked well with little direction and an uncertain environment as he took the function from 0 to 1.”

Blair Chenault

“If working in the uncertainty and ambiguity of a startup environment is like being adrift at sea, having Darrell on your team is like having GPS, a compass, and a north star all rolled into one. His abilities as a lead QA engineer are second to none.”
